Summer School & Hackathon

Workshops, Summer Schools and Scientific Challenges

As part of the PATHFOOD project, a series of interactive, hands-on events will be organised to support skill development, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among researchers at various stages of their careers.

Our educational programme includes specialised summer and winter schools as well as a dynamic science hackathon, all designed to foster expertise in advanced analytical techniques and encourage interdisciplinary cooperation.

Through these activities, participants will gain practical experience, broaden their research perspectives, and connect with experts and peers working at the intersection of food science, chemistry, and biotechnology.

Winter School on Synchrotron X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy for direct speciation of Selenium in plants.

A one-week summer school will be organized to provide training in advanced scientific research techniques. The 5-day program will cover the entire research process, including proposal preparation, experimental procedures, data analysis, and interpretation.

The initiative aims to introduce participants to modern methodologies and tools used in scientific investigations. The program will also include practical sessions and a visit to a cutting-edge research facility, offering insights into the application of these techniques in real-world scenarios.

This summer school is designed to foster an understanding of innovative approaches in research and encourage skill development in experimental design and data processing.

Summer/Winter School on Capillary Electrophoresis

A 5-day summer school will be organized to explore the fundamental and practical aspects of capillary electrophoresis (CE) in food and phytochemical analysis. The training will focus on the analysis of plant secondary metabolites, particularly in the context of their interaction with selenium metabolism.

The program will cover various CE separation techniques, including capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC), and capillary electrochromatography (CEC). Key topics will include the influence of operational conditions on separation performance, the role of background electrolyte solutions (BGE) in the separation process, and the compatibility of BGE with mass spectrometry hyphenation and online preconcentration methods.

The course will highlight the versatility of CE in analyzing complex samples with low analyte concentrations, emphasizing its cost-effectiveness, minimal use of hazardous chemicals, and alignment with green chemistry principles. This initiative aims to demonstrate the applicability of CE in diverse analytical contexts, particularly in food and phytochemical research.

Science Hackathon for Collaborative Problem Solving

A science hackathon will be organized to tackle specific scientific challenges through collaborative teamwork. The event will involve up to 20 participants, divided into four teams, who will work intensively over a 12-24 hour period to develop innovative solutions to predefined problems.
The hackathon will be supervised by mentors from partner institutions, ensuring guidance and expertise throughout the process. Participants will present their solutions in the form of team presentations, and the best projects will be selected and recognized by a jury. The jury will consist of experienced researchers, industry representatives, and advisory board members from participating organizations.
The hackathon aims to foster creativity, teamwork, and practical problem-solving skills while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among participants.
